NC ASCD Region 7 Conference
Instructor: NCCS   
On Tuesday, March 1st, Newton-Conover City Schools will host the NC ASCD Region 7 Conference. All members of Region 7 are invited to attend. Sessions will be presented by educators from Newton-Conover City Schools, Hickory Public Schools, Catawba County Schools, and Iredell-Statesville Schools.

The cost to attend this conference is $10 per participant. The registration fee covers dinner, which will be provided after the sessions. Please send payment to:

All sessions are directly tied to the North Carolina Professional Teaching Standards. You'll learn about tools and strategies that will help you create artifacts to document your progress on the North Carolina Professional Teaching Standards.

Session A: Teacher Empowerment 
(Standard I - Teachers demonstrate leadership) 
Learn how schools can utilize goal teams/priority teams to empower teachers and give them ownership of decision-making.

Session B: Teaching Reading in the Digital Age (Standard IV - Teachers integrate and utilize technology in their instruction)
Learn new strategies, resources, and tools for integrating technology into your daily reading instruction.

Session C: Data Notebooking (Standard IV - Use a variety of methods to assess what each student has learned)
Data notebooking gives students ownership over their learning by involving them in tracking and analyzing data. Learn how teachers can implement data notebooks and data walls to make the most of their assessment data.

Session D: Reinventing the Core: Our Journey Implementing Small Group Differentiated Reading Instruction in K-5 (Standard II - Teachers establish a respectful environment for a diverse population of students; Standard IV - Teachers facilitate learning for their students.)
Creating a shared vision of effective reading instruction helped us energize our reading core.  Come share our excitement and our strategies for linking reading instruction, assessment and extra support for struggling readers.

Session E: Making Co-Teaching/Inclusion a Success (Standard II - Teachers establish a respectful environment for a diverse population of students; Standard IV - Teachers facilitate learning for their students.) 
Discover how we thought “outside the box” to empower staff implementation of co-teaching and inclusion with existing resources.

Session F: Benchmark Assessments: One District's Journey to create assessments that inform instruction (Standard IV - Use a variety of methods to assess what each student has learned)
This session will outline the steps on the journey in HPS to create benchmark assessments in math. We will explore how we maintained our commitment to fully involve teachers in the process and remain true to our curriculum maps while working with and outside vendor.  Our process was complex yet rewarding to all.

Session G: Sight Words Vs. High Frequency Words: They All Spell Fishy to Me! (Standard III -Teachers know the content they teach)
The session will explore the difference between high frequency words and sight words.  Additionally, participants will leave with an array of activities to support sight word/high frequency word learning in their classrooms. The session aligns with NCSCOS for k-2 classrooms.

Session H: Making Meaning Together:  Content Literacy and Collaboration (Standard III - Teachers incorporate literacy instruction within the content area & Standard I - Teachers create a culture that empowers students to collaborate and become lifelong learners)
In this session, content literacy strategies that incorporate student collaboration will be demonstrated.

Session I: Math and Literature Connections (Standard III - Teachers recognize the interconnectedness of content areas/disciplines)
In this session participants will be given ideas on how to help their students make connections between math and literature.

Session J: Choose your Journey: Destination...Excellence (Standards II and IV)
Participants will be given ideas for scheduling alternatives and service methods for meeting the needs of middle school students through the problem-solving model.

Session K: The Learning Target /Formative Assessment Connection for Student Success (Standard IV)
Teachers will engage in critical conversations regarding assessment for learning as opposed to assessment of learning.  The importance of creating Clear Learning Targets and using informal formative assessment strategies to assess understanding will be the focus of this session.  Participants will overview the work of Susan Brookhart and learn about research in the field of formative assessment.  Facilitators will share informal formative assessment strategies with an effect size of 0.4-0.7 that teachers can take back into the classroom and use the very next day.
